Cynthia Ozick has been hailed as one of the greatest American story writers today. Born in New York in 1928, she is renowned as a writer of essays, short stories and novels and has been described as “the most accomplished and graceful literary stylist of our time”. Always engaged with the Jewish tradition, Ozick’s work is funny, daring and serious, cutting through life to its core of meaning. Her new novel The Bear Boy is an outsider’s view of depression-era New York set at a unique moment in US history.
In conversation with Mark Lawson, Ozick discusses the characters and ideas which have influenced her work.
Cynthia Ozick is the award-winning author of more than a dozen acclaimed works of fiction and non-fiction including The Pagan Rabbi and Other Stories (1971) and The Shawl (1989), considered a modern classic.
Mark Lawson has presented The Late Review on BBC2 since 1994 and has twice been TV Critic of the Year. His novel Enough Is Enough is published this year.
