Rubies and Rebels

Continuing in the long tradition of Jewish women causing trouble Susannah Heschel, Julia Neuberger and Lynne Segal will be exploring the impact of the Women’s Movement on Judaism and vice versa. These three formidable women will be mining the contradictions and inspirations that come with the overlapping territory at the intersections of Feminism and Jewishness which has shaped their own lives as educators, agitators and activists.

Baroness Julia Neuberger became a rabbi in 1977. She has served as Chief Executive of the King’s Fund and is currently chairing the Commission on the Future of Volunteering. She is a House of Lords peer and the author of several books on Judaism, women and healthcare ethics. Her most recent book was The Moral State We’re In.

Lynne Segal is Professor of Psychology and Gender Studies at Birkbeck College, London. She is active in working for peace in the Middle East and has published widely on feminism, masculinity and sexuality. Her latest book, Making Trouble is ‘a collective memoir of her political generation of post-war rebels and dreamers’.

Susannah Heschel holds the Eli Black Chair in Jewish Studies in the Department of Religion at Dartmouth College, USA. Her scholarship focuses on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries. She has also written extensively on feminist issues related to Jewish Studies and edited a classic collection, On Being a Jewish Feminist, first published in 1983.

Dina Rabinovitch is a writer and critic, with four children whom she had young, breast-fed forever and she still got breast cancer!
