A Celebration of the Life of Dr Risa Domb (1937-2007)

In association with the Cultural Department of the Israeli Embassy

Dr Risa  Domb, who died in January, was the longest serving member of the Jewish Book Council and an inspirational and much loved colleague.

Holder of the first lectureship at Cambridge in Modern Hebrew, she went on to establish the Centre for Modern Hebrew and Israeli Studies there in 1993.  She was renowned for her gifted and passionate teaching and her commitment to promoting knowledge of Israeli literature.

Over a period of more than 20 years she brought over to Jewish Book Week virtually all of Israel’s leading writers – Yehuda Amichai, Aharon Appelfeld, Orly Castel-Bloom, David Grossman, Shifra Horn, T Carmi, Joshua Sobol, A B Yehoshua and S Yizhar among them – ensuring that their writing reached an international audience.

She was the author of three important books and more than thirty articles. Her last book, Identity and Modern Israeli Literature, will be launched at this event. She also edited New Women’s Writing from Israel, two volumes of stories by Israeli women writers in English translation. Sadly, she did not live to see the publication of the second of these, which is due to appear in March.

Please join us to honour her memory.
