The JC Evening

The Last Word: Reporting the Middle East

The evening opens with the award ceremony for the Chaim Bermant Prize

I still believe that if your aim is to change the world, journalism is a more immediate short-term weapon.
Tom Stoppard

David Landau is the editor of the avowedly secular and progressive Israeli daily, Haaretz. As an orthodox Jew, Landau was not an obvious choice for the position, but states that the only way of negotiating one’s way through Israel’s impossibly self-divided body politic is, regardless of one’s opinion, to invite that warring plurality of point of view into the editorial pages. Alan Rusbridger, as editor of the Guardian, has also created a forum for in-depth debate of the Middle East - both in paper and online - and faces similar challenges of maintaining both diversity and cohesion within the paper.

Alex Brummer is City Editor of the Daily Mail and an award winning financial journalist and foreign correspondent. He has written biographies of Lord Hanson and Lord  Weinstock and has recently been working with former World Bank president James Wolfensohn on his autobiography.  He is a regular columnist for the Jewish Chronicle and New Statesman.

Born and raised in England, David Landau studied at yeshivot in Israel and took a law degree at London University . He worked for The Jerusalem Post and Maariv . He joined Haaretz in 1993, was involved in the creation of the English edition. He was also Israel correspondent for The Economist. He is the author of Piety and Power: The World of Jewish Fundamentalism.

Alan Rusbridger is editor of the Guardian.
