Pursuing Justice

Thomas Buergenthal is a truly remarkable man, now one of the 15 judges at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, responsible for trying war criminals.  He talks here to Philippe Sands about his journey from Auschwitz to The Hague and his faith in justice. He believes that the recurrence of such atrocities will only be prevented by the international implementation of human rights

Thomas Buergenthal is a specialist in International and Human Rights Law. He has held numerous prestigious academic positions in US universities. He served as a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the UN Truth Commission for El Salvador and is a member of the UN Human Rights Committee. He has received the Gruber Prize for Justice for his contributions to the promotion of human rights. He has only recently published his memoir, A Lucky Child.

Philippe Sands QC is a barrister in the Matrix Chambers and Professor of International Law at University College London. His latest books are Lawless World and Torture Team.
