Marranos: The Other Within

In his long awaited work, Marranos: The Other Within. Split Identity and Emerging Modernity. Yirmiyahu Yovel tells the fascinating story of people both rejected by Jews as renegades and by Christians as Jews of impure blood. With its forced split identity, its tendency to religious dissent and secularity, the Marrano experience is also a profound meditation on dual identities and the birth of modernity.

Yirmiyahu Yovel is the Hans Jonas Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research and chairman of the Jerusalem Spinoza Institute at the Hebrew University. He has written widely on philosophy and history and his books include: Spinoza and Other Heretics, Kant and the Philosophy of History and Dark Riddle: Hegel, Nietzsche, and the Jews.

Listen to Professor Yovel's talk on Spinoza at JBW 2008.
