The Word Magician

Discover the wonderful world of Brazilian writer Moacyr Scliar. Physician and lifelong resident of Porto Alegre, Scliar tackles contemporary Brazilian society and Jewish tradition in equal measures. He reconciles in his colourful stories the multifarious influences that constitute a Latin American Jewish identity.

Moacyr Scliar’s novel The Centaur in the Garden was included on the National Yiddish Book Center’s list of the "100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature."  Yann Martell’s Life of Pi was famously inspired by Scliar’s novel Max and the Cats. His other works include The Carnival of the Animals, The Ballad of the False Messiah, The Strange Nation of Rafael Mendes and The Collected Stories of Moacyr Scliar. He is a life-time member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Rosine Jozef Perelberg, PhD is Visiting Professor at University College, London, a Training Analyst and Supervisor and a Fellow of the British Psycho-Analytical Society. Rosine Perelberg teaches regularly in Europe, Latin America and the USA. Rosine Perelberg has been named one of the Ten Women of the Year for 2006 by the Brazilian National Council of Women. She is the author of Time, Space and Phantasy; Time and Memory and Freud: A Modern Reader.
