You Call That Suffering? A Short Story Workshop

This practical creative writing workshop will look at ways of turning your own experiences and memories into moving and amusing Yiddish short stories.

Through writing exercises and a close reading of works by writers such as YL Peretz and Sholem Aleichem we'll explore the humour, courage and imagination that go into transforming crisis into comedy, and discover the inspiration in frustration.

Be prepared to kvetch and chuckle.

Shaun Levin currently teaches at Bishopsgate Insitute and The Groucho Club in Soho. He has run workshops in venues as diverse as the National Gallery, the Poetry Place, and London Zoo. He is the author of Seven Sweet Things and A Year of Two Summers, and most recently of Isaac Rosenberg's Journey to Arras: A Meditation. His stories appear in South Africa, Britain and North America, and, in Hebrew, in Israel in anthologies such as Modern South African Stories; Gay Times Book of Short Stories and The Slow Mirror: New Fiction by Jewish Writers. He is the recipient of an Arts Council Writers Award and is the editor of Chroma: A Queer Literary Journal.
