Meet the Cult Author

Pawel Huelle has a cult following both in Poland and internationally. A novelist, playwright and newspaper columnist, he worked for Solidarity, was a university lecturer in philosophy and head of Gdansk’s local television channel.

He talks to Maureen Freely about his life and work, including the novel that launched
his career, Who Was David Weiser?, the story of an enigmatic Jewish boy set in
Huelle’s native city of Gdansk.

Pawel Huelle is a novelist, playwright and newspaper columnist. His novels David Weiser, Mercedes-Benz, Castorp and The Last Supper have been translated into many languages.

Maureen Freely is a writer, translator, senior lecturer at Warwick University and a member of English PEN. She is the author of 8 novels and has translated most of Orhan Pamuk’s work.

Antonia Lloyd-Jones is a translator of Polish literature, particularly Pawe Huelle’s novels and stories, including The Last Supper, for which she won the Found in Translation Award 2008.
