Michael Hofmann: The Life and Work of Joseph Roth

Joseph Roth was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, the elegist of the cosmopolitan, tolerant and doomed Central European culture that flourished in the dying days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, best known for The Radetzky March, one of the most important novels of the last 100 years. His translator, Michael Hofmann, has done much to promote today's renewed interest in Roth and his new collection of Roth's letters provides a stunning biography. Avner de-Shalit and Sunder Katwala: Does the Identity of a City Matter in a Global Age?
Cities shape the lives and outlooks of billions of people, yet they have been overshadowed in contemporary political thought by nation-states, identity groups, and concepts like justice and freedom. Avner de-Shalit's new book, The Spirit of Cities, revives the classical idea that a city expresses its own distinctive ethos or values. He discusses cities and identity with Sunder Katwala, director of the new think tank British Future, which looks at identity, integration, migration and opportunity.
