Meet the Author

Melisande! What Are Dreams? is a first novel by the acclaimed American-Israeli author and translator Hillel Halkin, known for his essays and books of non-fiction on Israeli and Jewish subjects and for his translations from Hebrew and Yiddish literature. And yet Melisande! What Are Dreams?, a haunting and beautifully told love story set in America in the 1950s, 60's, and 70's, has intriguingly little Jewish about it and much that Halkin's readers have not encountered before in him. Here is a book that will surprise them and deeply move everyone.

Hillel Halkin is a writer (Across the Sabbath River: In Search of a Lost Tribe of Israel), a translator (Eli Amir, Sholem Aleichem) and novelist.
