Ron Arad

Ron Arad is a central figure in contemporary design, renowned for his willingness to push boundaries between disciplines and experiment with processes and materials. Many of his designs such as the Rover chair and the Bookworm bookshelf are iconic. His architectural projects including the Tel Aviv Opera House and Holon Design Museum are unique. The restless maverick designer comes to Jewish Book Week to talk to us about his passion for marrying unconventional forms with unexpected functions and the sources of his unbridled creativity. As he once said in an interview; “I’m afraid of boredom, fundamentalists and philistines.”

Ron Arad was born in Tel-Aviv. After completing his training at the Architectural Association, he established his own design practice – One Off – with Caroline Thorman in 1981. From 1997-2009 he was the first professor of industrial and furniture design at the RCA. His numerous projects encompass both design and architecture and his work is exhibited in public collections worldwide.
