The Jewish Book Council was founded in 1948 by Dr George Webber to promote the reading of books on all aspects of Jewish thought and culture. As well as presenting Jewish Book Week, the second oldest literary festival in the UK, the charity administers the Risa Domb-Porjes Prize for Hebrew-English Translation, runs a poetry prize for children and organises other book-related activities throughout the year.
