My Bible
Tuesday 2 March 2004 7.30pm
Andrew White
Chair: Simon Eder
In this session, Andrew White, who was in London,
having established The Institute of Religious Tolerance in Iraq,
only the week before, reflected on the role of biblical narrative in today’s
places of conflict in the Middle East. He
drew on his own extensive study of the Bible, which included a time at the Karliner Yeshiva in Me’ir Shearim. He also brought home the importance of the Bible
during times of crises and focused particularly on the stories of the exiles in
Babylon as
an inspiration for his work in Iraq.
Canon Andrew White is chair of
the Alexandria Process, bringing together the leaders of the three monotheistic
faiths in the Middle East
peace process. Director of the International Centre for Reconciliation, and
formerly the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Special Envoy to the Middle
East, he recently established the Iraqi Institute of
Religious Tolerance with Iraqi religious leaders.
