A lively evening of jazz, blues, poetry and classic melodies featuring Jacqui Dankworth, Oli Hayhurst, Jeremy Robson, Art Themen and Charlie Wood. Described by The Times as a ‘champion of poetry, Robson initiated and participated in the highly popular Poetry and Jazz-in-Concert events that featured many leading poets and musicians. With great material, both old and new, the tradition continues here.
Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK. Known primarily as a jazz singer, Jacqui’s unique musical palette also draws on folk, soul, classical, blues, and numerous other influences.
Maureen Lipman - writer, actress, pundit and now iPad artist - is in her fiftieth year as an irrational treasure. She writes regularly for, among others, Standpoint magazine and Spectator Health.
Oli Hayhurst plays double bass and bass guitar, working regularly with Julian Siegel, Ray Gelato and Jacwui Dankworth. He has played with Pharoh Sanders, Zoe Rahman, Gilad Atzom, Tim Whitehead, Bill McHenry, Kirk Lightsey and many others.
Jeremy Robson is an acclaimed and widely-published poet, and also a publisher with his own imprint over many years, publishing many high-profile authors. He and Maureen Lipman will be reading from Subject Matters, his powerful, witty and wide-ranging new poetry collection.
Art Themen is a jazz saxophonist who, since the early 1960s has worked with, amongst others, Alexis Korner, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Long John Baldry, Barbara Thompson, Michael Garrick, Henry Lowther and Graham Collier and latterly, Stan Tracey. He has accompanied numerous visiting US jazzmen, including Al Haig, Red Rodney, George Coleman and Nat Adderley. That he has achieved his present high standing in the jazz world while at the same time pursuing his medical career as a consultant surgeon, is testimony to his remarkable gifts.
Charlie Wood is a singer/songwriter and keyboardist whose eclectic musical style incorporates elements of jazz, blues, traditional R & B and popular music. Born in Memphis in 1967, Charlie now lives in the UK with his wife, singer Jacqui Dankworth. His most recent CD New Souvenirs was recorded in London and features an all-star lineup performing twelve new original Charlie Wood compositions.
