K A Novel of Brazil's "Disappeared"

Bernardo Kucinski
Chair: Rachel Lasserson

In K a father looks for his disappeared daughter during the military dictatorship in Brazil. K, a famous Yiddish writer, discovers how the repressive system works and how little he knew of his daughter’s clandestine political life. He blames himself for devoting more time and energy to literature than to his daughter.

Based on a true story, the book was written in just two months as an act of catharsis for Brazilian journalist and political scientist Bernardo Kucinski, who in true life is the brother of the disappeared woman.

“Of all the books I have read about this period, this is the one I found most moving” – Maria Victória Benevides, sociologist and writer, member of the Justice and Peace Commission in São Paulo.

K was the runner-up, and given an “honourable mention”, in the Portugal Telecom 2012 literary award, and was short-listed for the São Paulo government’s 2012 literary award.

Bernardo Kucinski is a journalist and lecturer at the University of São Paulo (USP). He was a presidential adviser during the first term of office of Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His sister disappeared in 1973.
